In 1984, Joyner-Kersee's Olympic dreams came true. Not only did she compete in the Olympics, but also she won a silver medal in the heptathlon. In 1985 Joyner-Kersee set a world record in the long jump with a jump of 23 feet 9 inches. In 1986 she set a new world record in the heptathlon at the Goodwill Games in Moscow, accumulating 7,148 points. After three weeks, she beat her own record. For these two world records, she was awarded the 1986 Sullivan Award for Best Amateur Athlete
