On June 28, 1964 Malcolm X announced the founding of the Organization of Afro-American Unity at Harlem's Audubon Ballroom. The OAAU was modeled on the Organisation of African Unity, a coalition of 53 African countries which had impressed Malcolm X during a visit to Africa earlier that year. The purpose of the OAAU was to fight for the human rights of African Americans and promote cooperation among Africans and people of African descent in the Americas. #TodayInBlackHistory
