There are three types of osmosis hypotonic, hypertonic, and isotonic. These are the effects of different solutions on blood cells. This picture is of the osmotic pressures on blood cells.

DIY Naked Egg- use to show chemical reaction (dissolves calcium carbonate shell), semi-permeable membrane, osmosis, (equalization of water concentration). Very cool when osmosis is shown using food coloring to prove to students that the water is actually passing through the semi-permeable membrane of the naked egg.

Tonicity: a measure of the osmotic pressure gradient (as defined by the water potential of the 2 solutions) of 2 solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane; commonly used when describing the response of cells immersed in an external solution; influenced only by solutes that can't cross the membrane, as only these exert an osmotic pressure; solutes able to freely cross the membrane don't affect tonicity because they will always be in equal concentrations on both sides of it
