On 6 July 1988 a series of explosions ripped through the Piper Alpha platform in the North Sea.  In the space of two hours, 167 men lost their lives.  It remains the world's worst offshore oil disaster.  Amazingly 61 men survived - some by jumping 175ft (53m) from the rig's helicopter deck into the sea.
