A racing pigeon named Bolt officially became the most expensive pigeon in the world earlier this week when a Chinese businessman bought him at auction for $400,000. The pigeon, who is named after Olympic superstar Usain Bolt, sold at Belgiums Pipa auction house, according to the AP. The previous record price for a pigeon was $322,000.
After the Pattaya International Pigeon Race were held this month, with 1,547 birds from 10 Nations in Asia competing in the 530 km race starting in the northern city of Udon Thani. Organizers were surprised at the attention some of its birds received from the Thai public (see picture below). A point of interest to some would be pigeon racers, the event also held an auction where 10 million baht was splashed out on these once lofty messengers, with 2.5 million spent on one bird alone.
