TO SHOCK OR INFORM- Shortly after being convicted by a Northern California jury of murdering 12-year-old Polly Klaas, Richard Allen Davis stood up, turned to press-pool photographers and held up both of his middle fingers...many editors asserted that the Mercury News merely wanted to shock its readers and sell newspapers.
Polly Klaas - January 3, 1981 – October 1, 1993 the age of twelve, she was kidnapped at knife point from her mother's home during a slumber party in Petaluma, California, She was later strangled. Richard Allen Davis was convicted of her murder in 1996 and sentenced to death
