One of the highest achievements of Italian Gothic art and architecture is Orvieto Cathedral. Few buildings in the world are that ornate, and at the same time - few have such a well balanced and harmonious architecture.
Romanesque style - is marked by great variation in decoration. The carvings are very geometric and appear above the portal (archway) into a cathedral. Note the columns are slender with a smallish capital. The capital does have some carving at the top that is very detailed.
