Rust College - one of the oldest colleges for African Americans in the United States, the second-oldest private college in the state, it was founded in 1866 by Northern missionaries with a group called the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal. Rust College alum Leslie McLemore is professor emeritus of political science at Jackson State University. During his tenure at JSU, Dr. McLemore served as interim president in 2010. At JSU, he was the founding director of the Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy and was founding chair of the Department of political science. He is a past member of the Jackson MS City Council, past chair of the Mississippi Humanities Council
