Sargent Shriver(1915-2011) married Eunice Kennedy (1921-2009), a sister of John F. Kennedy, on May 23, 1953 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. They had five children. She was the founder of the Special Olympics and he was the driving force behind the Peace Corps.
I was very lucky to have worked with Eunice and Sargent Shriver. The finest example of true philanthropy, I found them to be truly amazing human beings. Spending a night in their home and being served breakfast by Mr. Shriver remains a highlight of my life. She was the first celebrity to stand up for people with intellectual disabilities (her sister was DD) and created Special Olympics, Unified Sports, and helped their son found Best Buddies.
