Ruffian (April 17, 1972- July 7, 1975) Voted top female racehorse of the 20th century. Her legend has earned her a place in the U.S Racing Hall of Fame. She remained undefeated until her 11th race when she injured herself in a match race against top colt (male horse) of the year, "Foolish Pleasure". She broke her sesamoid bones in her leg, but stubbornly refused her jockey's attempts to stop her on the track. She ran for another 100 yards, determined to win.
