Built between 548 and 565, the monastery is one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world. It contains the world's oldest continually operating library. Until relatively recently it had no external gateways at all. Entry and exit was effected by hoisting people and supplies up the external walls.
TURQUOISE -- One of the first mined gemstones -- The oldest known use was for Queen Zar's bracelets, the 2nd ruler of Egypt’s 1st Dynasty, circa 5,500 BCE. Sinai, Egypt was inhabited by the Monitu & was called Mafkat or “Country of Turquoise” as it was so plentiful. Egyptians were mining turquoise at Serebit al-Khadim on the Sinai Peninsula in 3000 BCE.
