12 Years a Slave - Intense. Horrifying. A must see. No smoothing over just an incredibly sad and horrifying story. Hats off to all involved in bringing this to the big screen-Brad Pitt, Steve McQueen, etc.

12 Years a Slave: Who was Solomon Northup?

12 Years a Slave: Who was Solomon Northup? There were always those who claimed Northup's tale was an exaggeration, written as anti-slavery propaganda. "After he was freed, there is documentation of his attempt to secure legal redress against his kidnappers. It was a bitter experience for him because in the nation's capital, Washington DC, Solomon's colour meant he wasn't allowed to testify. So the court case got nowhere but the paperwork is now a big help to historians."

12 Years a Slave - Movie Review

Nicholas was born into slavery. His father was his owner and his mother a slave just the same. It was only by luck and kindness that he was saved and bought later. His freedom was given to him, but his life is forever marred.
