The Texas Hill Country has much to offer. Westcave Preserve is a great example of this. Just past Hamilton Pool only 27 miles from downtown Austin, this lush hidden gem turns green in the spring with ferns and cypress. The steps in this Westcave Preserve image lead up to an outlook that rests behind the 40 foot waterfall (more of a trickle on most occassions). Still, it is cool and green - a nice break on a hot Texas summer day.
Brighten a shady spot with white-flowering bulbs. Fragrant paperwhite narcissus paired with 'Spring Green' tulip, for example, is a sure way to bring life to a corner shaded by deciduous trees. A groundcover carpet of vinca adds touches of purple, and boxwood shrubs provide structure. Make your shade stand out even more with a variegated vinca variety, such as 'Illumination' or 'Sterling Silver'.
