St. Bernard dogs were bred by the monks of the monastery of the Saint Bernard Pass to assist in rescue operations of travelers. They were giant dogs and currently can weigh between 140 & 263 pounds. The most famous rescue dog was Barry, because he saved between 40 & 100 lives. Barry is preserved at the Natural History Museum in Berne. The carrying of brandy in a cask on rescue operations is considered to be legend.
St. Bernard - a breed of very large working dog from Swiss Alps, originally bred for rescue. The breed has become famous through tales of alpine rescues, as well as for its enormous size. The calm, easygoing Saint Bernard is gentle and patient around children, although he is not particularly playful. He is devoted to his family and is willing to please, although at his own pace. He enjoys cold weather and does not do well in heat. All Saints drool.
