President Syngman Rhee

Syngman Rhee was the first president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea as well as the first president of South Korea. His latter three-term presidency (August 1948 to April 1960) was strongly affected by Cold War tensions on the Korean peninsula. Rhee was regarded as an anti-Communist and a strongman, & he led South Korea through the Korean War. His presidency ended in resignation following popular protests against a disputed election. Rhee aligned himself with the collaborators of the Japanese and attacked left-leaning peasant associations that were popping up. Syngman Rhee’s authoritarian presidency lasted ten more years until 1960, when following popular protests against a disputed election, he resigned. More than 200,000 perished under his reign of terror.
