Maria Stroinska, 82, holds a family photo taken before the war, as she poses for a portrait in Warsaw Jan. 12, 2015. Stroinska was 12 years old during the Warsaw Uprising when she and her sister were sent from their house to a camp in Pruszkow before she was moved alone by train to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Queen Victoria, 1861. Prince Albert died that year but this was probably taken before that happened (he died in late December). Her dress here is quite magnificent - some kind of ruched silk perhaps, and in a dark colour but not necessarily black.
Newgrange passage tomb is one of Ireland’s most important and oldest archaeological sites. This photograph was taken before the excavation that uncovered the roof box through which the winter solstice sun lights up the ancient tomb.
