The Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world (Males weigh about 18lbs.) and is the iconic symbol of Tasmania. It was declared an endangered species by the Tasmanian government in 2008 due to the rapid decline in its numbers since the 90's from a nonviral, but transmissable facial cancer. smithsonianmag.com #Tasmanian_Devil #Tasmania #smithsonianmag
Numbers of the Tasmanian Devil have been reduced by 80% since 1996. Because of limited genetic diversity on the island, they have developed a type of cancer that is rapidly leading the species towards extinction. (Jurgen & Christine Sohns / FLPA / Minden Pictures)
Tasmanian devils are usually nocturnal animals, sleeping in burrows or hollow logs during the day and emerging at night to feed. Occasionally individuals such as this snoozing specimen in Tasmania will break the pattern and come out in daylight to bask in the sunshine.
