Arthur Phillip by Francis Wheatley Date painted: 1786 Oil on canvas, 90.2 x 69.2 cm Collection: National Portrait Gallery, London - Phillip spent his whole career in the Navy, as an officer and as a naval spy. After many campaigns and expeditions, he landed in Australia at Port Jackson in January 1788 where he founded the first convict settlement, which later became the city of Sydney.
