The California Missions are a series of 21 settlements running up the California coastline from what is now San Diego all the way to San Francisco. These missions were established by the kingdom of Spain & founded & maintained by missionary Catholic priests, monks & brothers while also serving as military garrisons for Spanish soldiers. The first mission was built in 1769 under the supervision of Father Serra in what is now San Diego. After a time, the missions would expand into a small town.
A stay in California wouldn’t be complete without a road trip on the Pacific Coast Highway. The iconic Hwy 1 continues along most of the California coast through to Oregon and Washington and can be enjoyed at any pace… whether it’s over the course of 1 day or 2 weeks. Road trips are one of my favorite ways to travel, and of course I love my Southern California home, so I couldn’t think of a better girl’s getaway than taking this coastal road trip!
The California Condor is the largest North American land bird and inhabits northern Arizona and southern Utah, coastal mountains of central and southern California, and northern Baja California. The condor is a scavenger and eats large amounts of carrion. It is one of the world's longest-living birds, with a lifespan of up to 60 years.
Old Blue Eyes lived a long, fast-paced movie star life up until he died of a heart attack in 1998 at the age of 82. Frank Sinatra's last words as the doctors attempted to stabilize him were, "I'm losing." What a sadly existential realization. He's buried in Desert Memorial Park in the California desert town of Cathedral City, near Palm Springs.
