The Hippopotamus lived in Egypt from 1550-1068 BC and was often used to symbolize fertility and strength. Egyptians often painted the Hippopotamus or made figurines from the animal like this one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This specific figurine is engraved with plants that are reflective of their natural habitat. Three of the hippos legs were purposely broken off before being placed in the tomb. It was an animal that needed to be protected against on the journey to the after-life.
