March 25, 1931: Nine black males who became known as the "Scottsboro Boys" were falsely charged with rape in Alabama. Over the course of 45 years and many re-trials, they were each pardoned from prison and declared (oops!) innocent.

Oscar Micheaux was born on January 2, 1884, in Metropolis, Illinois. He became an independent filmmaker after making a movie about his homestead in South Dakota. He went on make more than 45 films for African American audiences starring black actors and actresses. The low budget films dealt with race and issues within the black community. He died on March 25, 1951.

Arkansas jurist Mifflin Wistar Gibbs  became the nation's first African American judge in 1873. From 1850-1858, he ALSO served as U.S. consul to Madagascar.
