March 25, 1931: Nine black males who became known as the "Scottsboro Boys" were falsely charged with rape in Alabama. Over the course of 45 years and many re-trials, they were each pardoned from prison and declared (oops!) innocent.
Janet Collins was the first and only African American to become Prima Ballerina at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1951). That was almost 65 years ago and she alone today still holds that accomplishment.
Oscar Micheaux was born on January 2, 1884, in Metropolis, Illinois. He became an independent filmmaker after making a movie about his homestead in South Dakota. He went on make more than 45 films for African American audiences starring black actors and actresses. The low budget films dealt with race and issues within the black community. He died on March 25, 1951.
