Mscore = In anesthesiology, the Mallampati score, also Mallampati classification is used to predict the ease of intubation. A high Mallampati score (class 4) is associated with more difficult intubation as well as a higher incidence of sleep apnea. The goal is to assess whether the upper airways may be seen easily during tracheal intubation. The higher the score, the higher the risk of a difficult intubation.
Etomidate (USAN, INN, BAN) (Amidate) is a short acting intravenous anaesthetic used for the induction of general anaesthesia and for sedation for short procedures such as reduction of dislocated joints, tracheal intubation and cardioversion.Etomidate is a carboxylated imidazole derivative that has anesthetic and amnestic properties, but that has no analgesic properties.Etomidate is a modulator at GABAA receptors containing β3 subunits.
Suxamethonium chloride (INN), also known as suxamethonium or succinylcholine, is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist, used to induce muscle relaxation and short-term paralysis, usually to facilitate tracheal intubation. Suxamethonium is sold under the trade names Anectine, Quelicin, and Scoline. It is used as a paralytic agent for euthanasia/immobilization of horses.
Rows of irons lungs filled hospital wards at the height of the polio outbreaks of the 1940s and 1950s. Polio vaccination programs have virtually eradicated new cases of poliomyelitis in the United States. Because of this, and also the development of modern ventilators and widespread use of tracheal intubation and tracheotomy, the iron lung has virtually disappeared from modern medicine. For example, in 1959, there were 1,200 people using tank respirators in the United States, but by 2004…
