Leonard Nimoy | US Army Reserves (1953-1955). He received his final discharge in Nov 1955 with the rank of Sergeant. According to the National Archives, Nimoy's Army personnel file was destroyed in 1973 during a major fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri... and as a result, there's not much public information about his service.
Approximately 5,000 US war canines served in the Vietnam War, however the US Army did not keep records prior to 1968. Michael Lemish, military dog historian and author estimates that K9 teams prevented about 10,000 casualties! And although they were real troopers, only a few hundred dogs "came home." The remaining were either euthanized or left behind for the South Vietnamese. We remember their amazing service!
Neville Brand (1920-1992) joined the US Army in 1939, meaning to make a career in the military. According to official military records, Brand was the recipient of the Silver Star for gallantry in combat. His other awards and decorations are the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European/ African/ Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Battle Stars, one Overseas Service Bar, one Service Stripe, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
