The US Navy again honored the Edison family by naming a nuclear submarine, the USS Thomas A. Edison, after the great inventor. Designated SSBN 610, the ship was an Ethan Allen class ballistic missle submarine, launched on 6/15/61 by Madeleine Edison Sloane, the daughter of Thomas Edison. The ship's apt motto was "Power to Repel the Darkness".
