The women never smiled in photos because: film speeds were VERY slow back then, and as a result exposures could be in the range of several minutes to a couple of hours. Imagine holding a smile for 15min-2 hours. Many times peoples heads had to be held in place with clamps places on the back of the head attached to a stand, to keep them from moving during the exposure.
