The greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions. As a result, the average surface temperature is higher than it would be if heated by solar radiation only. Earth’s natural greenhouse effect makes life as we know it possible. However, human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests, have greatly intensified the natural greenhouse effect.
02/15/2013 The Misunderstood Basic Concepts and The Greenhouse Effect by Dr. Roy W. Spencer offers a great insight on the commonly misunderstandings of the greenhouse effect. It explores topics from how the greenhouse effect does not necessarily require solar heating, the effects on the temperature and the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics("energy input into a system does not alone determine what the temperature in the system will be".
