On February 20, 1862 the son of US President Abraham Lincoln, William Wallace Lincoln, died aged 11. Known as ‘Willie’, he died due to illness which was most likely typhoid fever. His brother Tad also became ill, but later recovered. His parents were deeply affected, with President Lincoln not returning to work for three weeks and Mary Todd Lincoln being so distraught that her husband feared for her sanity.

The Engine "Nashville" that pulled Abraham Lincoln's funeral train. On Apr. 21, 1865 the train, known as "The Lincoln Special," with Lincoln's portrait fastened to the front, left Washington DC and travelled to Springfield, IL, arriving on May 3, 1865. On board along with Lincoln's remains were those of his son William Wallace Lincoln, who had died in the White House at the age of 11 of typhoid fever.
