The "Apennine Colossus" in 1579-80 by Giambologna (Douai, Flanders 1529 - Florence 1608). Villa di Patrlolino, Vaglia, Italy. Commissioned by the solitary Franceso I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Giambologna was a sculptor, known for his marble and bronze statuary in a late Renaissance or Mannerist style. He became well known for a fine sense of action and movement, and a differentiated surface finish. The sculpture is full of grandeur, and the character of the head is admirably effective.
