Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) Annual plant from Central America. The rounded flowers of the globe amaranth look like brilliant purple clover, though it may come in other colors such as white, pink, and lavender. As well as being a tough survivor in the heat, globe amaranth makes a good plant for drying. Stiffly branching plants to 2 feet (.60 m) tall and 1 foot (.3 m) wide. Profuse bloomers.

In northern areas, Gomphrena should be started indoors by April 15 for July blooms. Transplant l0 inches apart. Gomphrena is a good cut flower, and lasts for days. It is also a fine Everlasting. Flowers dry quickly and easily for winter arrangements, retaining their shape and color.

Gomphrena (Gomphrena Globosa Mix ) White, pink, rose, Salmon,and purple. Great for cutting and drying - Gomphrena (Gomphrena Globosa Mix ) - What a great addition to your flower garden! Globe Amaranth seeds readily produce these bright little golf ball-like blooms. They look so attractive on the bushy, well-branched plant that they're the perfect complement to everything else in the sunny garden. Butterflies will flock to the Gomphrena flowers, and they make an excellent cut flower for either fresh or dried arrangements. The flower heads are quite popular for use in dried arrangements and will hold their shape and color indefinitely. Cut them early, just as the heads are opening, and hang them upside down in a warm, dark place to dry. Gomphrena or Globe Amaranth is an annual bedding plant that grows 24 inches tall with a spread of about 1 foot. The branched stems are stiff and the plant has a bushy appearance. The leaves are oblong and from 4 - 6 inches long, and wooly-white when they are young. The clover-like flower heads, 1 1/2 inches long, are on upright spikes from summer until frost. The individual flowers within the flower heads are inconspicuous, but the stiff, papery bracts that form the bulk of the structure are colorful and come in several showy shades. Plant Gomphrena Globosa seeds indoors, several weeks before the last frost is expected, or directly outdoors when the temperatures have warmed. If sowing Gomphrena seeds indoors, transplant the seedlings to the sunny garden spot when they are several inches tall. Wash the egg shells out, crush them, not to a powder but almost, sprinkle them on a baking sheet and bake them till they are a light brown. Then sprinkle them around your tomatoes/veggies. Both the bone meal and egg shells are a source of calcium which is good for fruiting.You could also dissolve Tums tablets for added alcium.  Dig a hole that is two-and-a-half times deeper than the root ball of the tomato plant and twice as wide as the root ball. This will give the plant plenty of room to spread and encourage the roots to grow in an outward direction. Drop 1 cup epsom salt and 1 cup of granulated sugar along with a few eggshells into the hole, as they contain phosphorous that helps tomatoes grow and flower. Sugar granules break up and help offset the acidity of the fruit; they become absorbed into the tomato plant through its root system. Epsom salt provides beneficial nutrients for the plant. Magnesium and sulfur act together to fertilize a tomato plant. Use the point of the shovel to blend together . Place a tomato plant in the bottom of the hole so that the stem points upwards.  Pull the loose soil back into the hole with a hoe. Vegetable gardeners call this "back-filling" the hole. Wear your gardening gloves and tamp the dirt down around the tomato plant with the palms of your hands.  Use a watering can to water your freshly planted tomato plant. Gardeners call this "watering in" a tomato plant. Use at least one watering can of water per plant. I love the look and feel of what I call California Casual.  That's what I call the set design in the Christmas movie  It's Complicated. OK, I know it's early February and we're buried in 24" of snow. I admit I'm a little late but I'm finally putting together this post... I've been thinking about it for more than a month. Open spaces that merge interior and exterior speak to me. Kitchen gardens, herb gardens or any edible garden inspires me to spend more time in the kitchen.... Yet, most of all I absolutely love any design opportunity that gives me the chance to work with natural fabrics, linen drapes, cashmere throws, wool carpet and introduce elements of green decor into a space.
