The deep gash in its forehead - lined with blue spikes - is a totally natural feature. Scientists aren’t sure why this newly discovered #fish has such a bizarre facial feature. “It could be for burrowing or maybe it’s just bling,” said David Boyd, one of our ichthyology collection team. #species #fishes #biodiversity

Osteology
What's this? Definitely not something we found in Area 51. This is the skull of a hammerhead #shark (minus the jaw). Now you know what's under the cephalofoil--the wide head. The wide-set eyes paired with their ampullae of Lorenzini make them efficient hunters. #SummerOfSpecimens There have only been 17 unprovoked attacks by hammerhead sharks, within no human fatalities.

We think the family Lepisosteidae is GAR-geous but the Longnose Gar (Lepisosteus osseus) has the most prominent snout of Florida's species. These ancient fish are pretty impressive, with diamond-shaped ganoid scales and long jaws with sharp conical teeth. #FishFriday #FreshWaterFish

#FishFriday and we're still talking about fresh water fish of #Florida. But this is a Mountain Mullet (Agonostomus monticola) which is a marine species. It enters freshwater creeks, rivers, and canals and some populations are thought to spawn in fresh water. Look at those gorgeous scales! Photo: Zach Randall
