May 22, 1938: In 1937, the Boston Public Library rebound 75,000 books. Library employee Nettie Bandiera is shown here preparing to do a job of hand stitching to the 1938 collection. A study by the library at this time showed that books averaged just five lendings before they came to the bindery for rebuilding. Boston Globe Archives. (Though this was before my time, I used to love the rebound library books: so many neat designs. rw)
