Always talking about #stone and didn't you miss the Easter Island?? #EasterIsland (#RapaNui) is a #Polynesian island in the southeastern #Pacific Ocean, at the southeastern most point of the Polynesian #Triangle. Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called #moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site.
The Moai Easter Island/Rapa Nui; Isla de Pascua in Chili. This isolated island, is now owned by Chili, located in the Pacific Ocean, about 2,000 miles (3,200km) from Chile & Tahiti. It was discovered on Easter Sunday in 1722 by Jacob Roggeveen). In the10th & 16th centuries, ceremonial shrines (ahu) were built & hundreds of statues (Moai) were erected, carved from porous, volcanic rock (scoria). The Moai range in ht from 2m to 20m(6.6 to 65.6 ft) & weigh many tons.
Easter Island and Moia - Mysterious giant stone monoliths called Moai dot the coastline of Easter Island. These ancient statues were finalists in the campaign to choose new World Wonders.
Easter Island, Chile top 10 most mysterious places
I have wanted to go to Easter Island since I first read about it in National Geographic World magazine when I was about 7 or 8. Would be a huge bucket list item.
RAPA NUI NATIONAL PARK, Chile: was inscribed on the list as a "remarkable cultural phenomenon". Also known as Easter Island, Rapa Nui is the most remote inhabited island on the planet. From the 10th to the 16th centuries this society built shrines and erected enormous stone figures known as moai, free from any external influence. It is estimated that there are about 900 statues, more than 300 ceremonial platforms, and thousands of structures related to agriculture, funeral rites, & housing.
