Charlie's Favourite Cafes

A collection of cafes that I have personally visited (for some, on many occasions!) and recommend!

This is my closest café to home, situated in Chipping Norton. Jaffé & Neale is the resort of most of our family coffee inspiration outings, providing a wealth of interesting and ever-varying books to browse & buy before sitting down for tea or hot chocolate in the bright front window seating area. We like the location not only for its proximity to home but it spills into the centre of the town, a perfect location to people watch or convene after charity shopping. Go for the flapjack.

Jaffe & Neale Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire One of the vanguard of new, vibrant independents. A favorite spot of Graeme Woods.

Just half a mile from my family home, I have trudged to Wyatt’s through snow and storms when stranded during the holidays, or village power-cuts, or sometimes when I fancy a coffee while working on a project without the distraction of wifi (which they don’t have). What they can offer is an extensive farm shop + gift shop, sofas, large home-baked country cakes, local Jeeves & Jericho teas in cast iron teapots and a stunning view as the Cotswold hills drop away dramatically into Warwickshire.

Expect clean large wooden tables and Banbury cakes (among others of course). Nestled in a corner of the antiques centre this is a pretty good place to stop for a cuppa after browsing the various delights of multiple antique sellers’ styles and delights all under one roof – from beautiful French grey furniture to retro 80s collectors’ items. The range and contents are fantastic, but be warned: one could spent a lot here, & it’s not a cheap place!

This is a brunch place to me. But it’s neither regrettable greasy fry-up nor super pricey poor excuses for breakfast; you can get a bacon buttie, scrambled eggs or a reasonably priced salad bowl or sandwich. Its style brightly coloured mismatched chairs & cushions with old wooden tables – done in a rustic & ready rather than pretentious way. I recommend the Chai tea… by far the most flavoursome I have ever tasted and it arrives in a little cafetiere, to which you add your own amount of…

I drove past this many times thinking how cosy this deli looked before one day swerving into a parking space on impulse on the way home from the station with my brother. Since then I have taken my whole family for coffee there. Sitting in this tiny wonderous café is like squeezing into a box full of luxury biscuits and cheeses – from one of the three or so small tables you can reach shelf after shelf of tempting chocolates, biscuits and chutneys, and local beers.
