Trying hard not to eat our own merchandise, but #daylilies are #delicious & make it tough. The hemerocallis fulva (which is not a true lily - no bulb!) is fully edible, from root to flower. It grows everywhere, but make sure to consult a plant guide before chowing down on any potential hybrids or similar cultivars. #wildfood #eatlocal #foraged #foraging
Fiddleheads - Matteuccia struthiopteris - Ostrich fern. I have found that the best way to cook them is to rinse and then blanch them briefly in seasoned water. Remove and then boil for 5 minutes in a clean change of seasoned water. Picking fiddleheads is easy, each plant will put up 7 fronds that unravel. When harvesting only take about half of what the plant puts up. Only taking 3 or 4 off per plant will ensure that the ferns can come up again the following year. Fiddleheads grow all over…
#mayapple / #mandrake / #groundlemon - Out of 44 plants we got 3 fruits. The raccoons got the rest. Finally ripe the mayapple is soft and a pale yellow white colour with a tropical smell. Some compare the flavour to pear and the texture to a grape. If you are #lucky enough to find some ripe fruits, make sure to remove the #toxic seeds before #eating #wildfood #foraged #scaryfood #inseason #deadly #tasty #ediblewildplants
#Chaga - #inonotus #obliquus - Hand picked from birch forests in Northern Quebec and available now! Chaga has a mild caramel mocha flavour and is often consumed as a tea or by brewing like Turkish coffee. Chaga is one of the key medicinal mushrooms, used by people boosting their immune system, recovering from chemo, or who are looking for something rich in antioxidants. Would love to see some pioneering coffee shops incorporating this into their offerings.
