At maximum speed, centrifugal force is pulling the wall outward and increasing the likelihood of an accidental bowl. But with the right balance of pressure between the fingers there’s no reason you can’t throw a straight cylinder. Bonus points if you shape it too. This is also a good exercise for those with a reflex to slam on the breaks every time they sense danger. Set the speed and take your foot off. Let the hands figure out what to do with the speed. Florian Gadsby on Instagram: "Handle pulling, one of my favourite processes, yes it looks salacious, trust me, I’ve heard it. It’s a quick and easy method, yet the initial learning stage can be troublesome as you’ll inevitably destroy many well thrown and trimmed pots with sloppy, poorly pulled handles. With enough practice though this disparity will level. I learnt by pulling 5-6 handles on one chunky cylinder, then I’d cut them off, let the pot dry, and try again and again until it started to make sense. There are a few questions that always come up when I show this process, so here are the answers you might be looking for. I attach the blanks immediately after pulling them. I don’t let them dry or alter their shape prior to adjoining the blanks to the cups, instead they’re fastened

One of the hardest parts of this is knowing how much to charge for your work, especially when trying to calculate it for the first time. This is one way to look at pricing. Basically, the idea is to see how many of one piece you could realistically make in a month, and use that to work out the minimum you'd have to charge to make as much money as you'd need. It has its limitations for sure, but it's a good way to see what pieces make sense for your making processes and market. Energy prices have stabilised at a higher price than they were a few years ago, but they're nowhere near the peak prices (thank goodness!). Material costs aren't increasing as rapidly, but they're also significantly more than they were a few years ago. And it doesn't feel much like the world is trending towards peace and stability, so there continues to be financial and emotional stress across our customer base (whether that means they buy fewer mugs, or YOLO their way into a massive collection, I'm not sure!). It may seem like a small step, but it makes a huge difference later on. I start by forming a small mound, using steady pressure to lift the clay upwards with the palms of my hands. This helps align the clay particles and gets rid of any air pockets. Once the cone is formed, I push the tip down with one hand while supporting the sides with the other, gently compressing the clay back into a dome shape. The key is keeping both hands steady and moving slowly to avoid any wobble. This process helps me start with perfectly centered, workable clay every time. Using the index and middle fingers of your dominant hand, thumb hooked over your other hand for support. 2. Use both thumbs, push down and draw the clay apart. Thumbs need to be moving at the same speed with the same force or you’ll get a wobble. 3. The side of your fist. This one’s great for larger amounts of clay and for flatter forms such as plates big bowls and platters. You’ll notice the thumb of my left hand is touching my right hand to give added support. 👉🏻My arms are supported against my body or the splash pan at all times👈🏻 As I always say, there are loads of different ways to do things in pottery😉. Joe Thompson on Instagram: "How I make my slip, and what I use it for. It's an easy process (other than passing it through a sieve, which is a pain), but there are upsides to buying commercial decorating slip too. It is possible to adjust the recipe of a slip when making it from scratch, to reduce shrinkage and change how it fits on pieces. One of the downsides to making it from the same clay you throw in is that you need to apply the slip to relatively wet clay for the shrinkage to match. Commercial decorating slips will often be formulated to have a lower shrink rate, so will fit pieces that are more dry. The upside to making your own is that it is easier than recycling clay back to a throwable condition, so it allows you to reuse the clay trimmings with a lot less work. If you are m

To make an hangari form in the traditional Korean method, you need to be able to make a cylinder, the walls of which must have consistent thickness before you can venture into shaping. Take these steps with a grain of salt: shaping especially might require more movements depending on your goals and confidence with the clay. Note that every time you shape the clay, stress is placed on the jar which thickens the point at which the base meets the wall.
