Basmala II Wissam Shawkat

The art of Basmala in Islamic calligraphy is portrayed in a contemporary style by renowned Iraqi born artist, Wissam Shawkat. The words Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim are translated to mean In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. A recurring theme in many art forms of the region, the Basmala is beautiful expression of faith and is the phrase recited before each Sura (chapter) except for the ninth of the Qur’an.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم bismillah...

Allah, the one treue God. The word 'Allah' is the preferred word and name to call God by. Unlike other languages, it doesn't have a masculine, feminine or neuter connotation for He is above that. The term 'He' is used as we as humans have limited capacity to understand the true nature of God (in this life). Interestingly, the word 'Allah' also cannot linguistically have a plural (eg.God(s)); it just doesn't make sense - the beauty of the Arabic language.
