12 Years a Slave
Book Club, Worth Reading, Amazon Com, 12 Years, Slave, Twelve Years, Books Worth, Movie, Solomon Northup
"12 Years a Slave" by Solomon Northup. I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie at some point. Very interesting, both as a narrative about slavery and as a portrait of the Deep South at the time. Definitely belongs up with Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, and Olaudah Equiano.
Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup is a memoir of a black man who was born free in New York state but kidnapped, sold into slavery and kept in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana before the American Civil War. He provided details of slave markets in Washington, DC, as well as describing at length cotton cultivation on major plantations in Louisiana.
"12 Years a Slave" (2013) Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and a stellar cast. Director: Steve McQueen. On this day in 1853, Solomon Northup regained his freedom from being kidnapped into slavery. He went on, of course, to write the seminal memoir. The film won the award for Best Picture Drama at the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards.
12 Years a Slave - movie got me sobbing halfway through. Reading the book could be a better option.
12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup. Emily says, "The book is a riveting read written by a free, educated man from the North who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the 1840’s. It is captivating because it gives a firsthand account of slavery, from a person originally born free. Because he lived in the North, he didn’t know the extent of the cruelty of slavery until he had to live it himself."
12 Years a Slave; Really good. A very well-thought out and written 1st hand account. Now I need to see the movie! March 2014
This unforgettable memoir was the basis for the Academy Award-winning film 12 Years a Slave. This is the true story of Solomon Northup, who was born and raised as a freeman in New York. He lived the American dream, with a house and a loving family - a wife and two kids. Then one day he was drugged, kidnapped, and sold into slavery in the deep south. These are the true accounts of his twelve hard years as a slave - many believe this memoir is even more graphic and disturbing than the film.
Twelve Years a Slave - Solomon Northup. One of the best books I've ever read.

Alex Haley Roots - a TV movie, but still a movie. I remember watching it when I was younger and just being enthralled.
The best mini-series of all time is based on one of the best books of the 20th century. In tracing his roots, Alex Haley reclaimed our history and not just for Blacks, but for ALL Americans.
