This quote reminds me of the character Iago. He chooses to betray Othello and feed him lies about his relationship to Desdemona, causing Othello to doubt Desdemona's fidelity and ultimately murder her. There are various hints throughout the play that Iago does this in order to gain power, thus showing that opportunity overrides his loyalty to Othello.
