This is where I'm collecting and organizing information on the connection between inactivity and insulin resistance (and resultant metabolic dysfunction, diabetes, obesity, etc). I contend that carbohydrate is a red herring, a scapegoat created by the fad diet industry to sell diet books, supplements and food-like products. The real issue is inactivity, but there's no money in telling people to go take a walk.

Minimal Intensity Physical Activity (Standing and Walking) of Longer Duration Improves Insulin Action and Plasma Lipids More than Shorter Periods of Moderate to Vigorous Exercise (Cycling) in Sedentary Subjects When Energy Expenditure Is Comparable

Background Epidemiological studies suggest that excessive sitting time is associated with increased health risk, independent of the performance of exercise. We hypothesized that a daily bout of exercise cannot compensate the negative effects of inactivity during the rest of the day on insulin sensitivity and plasma lipids. Methodology/Principal Findings Eighteen healthy subjects, age 21±2 year, BMI 22.6±2.6 kgm−2 followed randomly three physical activity regimes for four days. Participants…

Use it or lose it--the hazards of bed rest and inactivity.

Professional experience and lay wisdom teach us the benefits of exercise and the hazards of idleness. Yet the myth persists that "bed rest is good for you" when ill or convalescing. Abundant scientific evidence in the past 50 years has demonstrated the ...

The Effects of Rosiglitazone, Metformin, and Diet with Exercise in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Our aım was to evaluate effects of metformin, rosiglitazone, and diet with exercise in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Forty-seven patients (mean age, 44±10 years; 17 female) whose ALT levels had been high for at least 6 months and with hepatosteatosis detected by liver biopsy and/or USG were enrolled in this study. Of these, 12 were treated with 850 mg/day metformin (group 1), 11 with 4 mg/day rosiglitazone (group 2), and 24 with diet and exercise (group 3) for 1 year. ALT normalization…

Adiposity Compared With Physical Inactivity and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Women

OBJECTIVE —The relative contribution of adiposity and physical inactivity to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes remains controversial. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS —We prospectively examined the individual and joint association of obesity and physical activity with the development of type 2 diabetes in 68,907 female nurses who had no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer at baseline. Adiposity was measured by BMI and waist circumference. Physical activity was assessed…

Our results show that a rapid increase in expression is an early adaptive response of muscle to exercise. Diet Books, Insulin Resistance, Fad Diets, Audiophile, Metabolism, Diabetes, No Response, Muscle, Science

Exercise induces rapid increases in GLUT4 expression, glucose transport capacity, and insulin-stimulated glycogen storage in muscle.

Abstract GLUT4 glucose transporter content and glucose transport capacity are closely correlated in skeletal muscle. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that a rapid increase in GLUT4 expression occurs as part of the early adaptive response of muscle to exercise and serves to enhance glycogen storage. Rats exercised by swimming had a approximately 2-fold increase in GLUT4 mRNA and a 50% increase in GLUT4 protein expression in epitrochlearis muscle 16 h after one prolonged exercise…

Synergistic interaction between exercise and insulin on peripheral glucose uptake.

The interaction of exercise and insulin on glucose metabolism was examined in 10 healthy volunteers. Four study protocols were used: study 1: plasma insulin was raised by approximately 100 microunits/ml while plasma glucose was maintained at basal levels ...
