A Visit from The Goon Squad, Jennifer Egan Not only did this book win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction this year, but it’s also been lapped up by the critics. The book is broken up into a series of short stories, many of which involve the character Bennie Salazar. Bennie is an aging rock executive who is getting more self-destructive as he gets older. The stories shift back and forth in time, vaulting from the late Sixities to the present day.
On my reading list! A Visit From The Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. Bennie is an aging former punk rocker and record executive. Sasha is the passionate, troubled young woman he employs. Here Jennifer Egan brilliantly reveals their pasts, along with the inner lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs. With music pulsing on every page, A Visit from the Goon Squad is a startling, exhilarating novel of self-destruction and redemption.
A video book review of A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. One of the top picks from In the Stacks librarians for your book club to read and the Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction in 2011.
loved this story. definitely the kind of book worth reading a few times to fully grasp the time and setting changes and how each character's stories become woven together.
River of Smoke by Amitav Ghosh - Amid a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal, three vessels, and the diverse occupants within, converge on Canton's Fanqui-Town, or Foreign Enclave, which is a powder keg awaiting a spark to ignite the Opium Wars.

River of Smoke by Amitav Ghosh. The sequel to Sea of Poppies definitely does not disappoint, and I think in some ways I liked it better. This book takes place (mostly) in Canton, China in the months preceding the outbreak of the Opium Wars. A very detailed account, Ghosh bases his narrative off of historical documents and artifacts left behind by the real people involved. Many of the characters are based off of real people. It's basically awesome.
River of Smoke, the sequel to Sea of Poppies, was named one of the best historical fiction books of 2012 by NPR.

The first book in the president agents series. I have been reading WEB Griffin for awhile, he mixes military action with a little romance, nothing really steamy.
