If 74 year old Ernestine Shepherd can get herself to the gym…what’s my excuse?! She has just been honoured by the Guinness Book of World Record for being the oldest female body builder. Ernestine only started body building at age 54! (What?!) And she’s up at 3 a.m. every morning, for her devotional prayers, after which she spends her day running, lifting weights and working out. She says she feels better now than she did in her 40s.
Ernestine Shepherd is a good example of being young at heart. At age 74, she's in better shape than most people twice her junior. Her secret? Exercise. Not only does Ernestine prove that staying young is doable, she also proves that it's never too late to get on the right track. For her, exercising didn't even begin to occur until she was age 56. According to her personal website (ernestineshepherd.net), at 56-years-old, Ernestine was a sedentary, well-padded school secretary and “slug” who had never worked out a day in her life. It wasn't until her and her sister one day decided to go shopping for bikini wear that the two realized it was time to get fit.Starting slowly and building her body step by little step, Ernestine over time completely transformed not only her body, but her life, too. Ernestine is currently a personal trainer, a professional model, a competitive bodybuilder, and says she could never be happier. If that's not a boost of inspiration and motivation, what is?
