Mariyinskiy Theatre in St. Petersburg: The box of Romanovs family ~~ The Imperial opera and ballet theatre in Saint Petersburg was established in 1783,at the behest of Catherine the Great, although an Italian ballet troupe had performed at the Russian court since the early 18th century. The Mariyinsky Theatre replaced the old building in 1860 and acts now. The theatre in named in honor of Maria, wife of Emperor Alexander II

Grand Duchess Alexandra, daughter of Emperor Paul I and Empress Marie Feodorovna.  She was especially close to her sister Elena.  Married to Archduke Joseph of Austria, and sadly, died giving birth to a little girl who did not survive.
