Quotatious & Literary
Excitations for my quotation anthologist soul. Quotation collecting, quoting, misquoting, quotation marks, books, writing, reading, grammar, language, humor, authors, prose and poetry, the beauty and quirks of words. Compiled by a quotatious word nerd, lover of literature, and ardent supporter of the serial comma. Unapologetic em dash and exclamation point renegade. Creative punctuation and invented words as literary art, weaving proper grammar and poetic license.

David Garrick (1770). Thomas Gainsborough (English, 1727-1788). Oil on canvas. © National Portrait Gallery, London. Garrick (English, 1717-1779) was an actor, producer, dramatist, poet, and comanager of the Drury Lane Theatre. Garrick's had the vivacity and versatility which distinguished him; and nature had given him an eye to command, and a mimic power of wonderful variety. The list of his characters in tragedy, comedy and farce is large, and would be extraordinary for a modern actor.

Portrait of Harlem Renaissance poet Countee Cullen by Consuelo Kanaga looking ultra-fresh and modern a long, long, time ago, c 1931
Countee Cullen wrote a story (One Way to Heaven) about a woman named Constancia Brandon who recently moved to Harlem with her husband from Oklahoma. Her broad vocabulary often offends people because they can't understand her, but her true friends know that she means well and that she's a very nice woman who does a lot for her community.

Mary Oliver (born 1935) is an American poet, winner of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. "Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" from the poem "The Summer Day," included in New and Selected Poems (1992), http://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/133.html.

"tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" -Poet Mary Oliver and her dog
To live in this world, you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go. ~Mary Oliver (1935- ), American poet, National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize
MARY OLIVER — Listening to the World Often quoted, but rarely interviewed, Mary Oliver is one of our greatest and most beloved poets. At 79, she honors us with an intimate conversation on the wisdom of the world, the salvation of poetry, and the life behind her writing.
When it's over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement. --from WHEN DEATH COMES” ― Mary Oliver, New and Selected Poems, Vol. 1
“It is no use thinking that writing of poems – the actual writing – can accommodate itself to a social setting, even the most sympathetic social setting of a workshop composed of friends. It cannot. The work improves there and often the will to work gets valuable nourishment and ideas. But, for good reasons, the poem requires of the writer not society or instruction, but a patch of profound and unbroken solitude.” ― Mary Oliver, A Poetry Handbook
In her new book, poet Mary Oliver expresses gratitude for her dog, Percy.

Langston Hughes one of my favorite poets. James Mercer Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form jazz poetry.
"A Dream Deferred" by Langston Hughes (pictured above) What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?
1920: Langston Hughes, eighteen, composes his great poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” on a train en route to Mexico.
Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called jazz poetry. Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He eventually became one of the first black writers to support himself through writing with his accessible, relatable voice.
