When is it warm enough to plant? Knowing about the temperature at which your edible plants grow is as important as knowing the other needs of the plants like water, sunlight, carbon dioxide, appropriate soil texture, available nutrients in the soil, fertilizers, pesticides, reclaimed soil etc. All these are very important for effective horticulture. We can simply say that the plants will not bear their fruits or veggies if they are not grown in an appropriate weather or season. The ones, which require high temperatures, can never yield during frost and the ones, which require cool temperature, can never grow in hot summers. A common rule which applies on most of the plants is that they do not grow while it snows or frosts. Different scientific experiments have provided us with a range of temperatures on which the list of plants including both edible and non-edible plants grows. Knowing the temperature at which the plants grow is one of the foremost things for the horticulturist. Plantation according to the Seasons: • Summers: Vegetables and grains like wheat, rice, eggplants, ladyfinger, hot pepper, bell pepper, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelons, mangoes, pulses etc. grow in summer. They require a temperature range between 18°C - 35°C • Spring: Whereas beans, corns, squash, pumpkin, cucumber, muskmelon and cowpea are the vegetables that grow in warm and mild seasons between the ranges of 10°C - 26°C • Winter: Beet, Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprout, collard, chard, radish, spinach, turnip, kale, coriander, lettuce, parsley, pea, cauliflower, celery, fennel, mustard, potatoes, onion, ginger, garlic and peppermint are some of the edible plants that grow during the temperature range of 4.5°C - 24°C There is an optimum temperature, at which the growth of the plant is maximum but with a fluctuation of some degrees Celsius above that and even below that plant grows quite a well, that’s why we describe a temperature range for the plants growth but obviously temperature difference if very high then the plant will never yield fruit or vegetable even if it has grown to some height with leaves on it. In this temperature parameter not only we consider the atmospheric temperature but also the soil temperature. For most of the plants soil temperature should be between 18°C - 30°C. One more important thing which should be considered is that the soil is reclaimed or not, if the soil is rich in salts due to waterlogging and salinity you will never able to grow anything on it and treatment of such soil once it gets infected by the salinity becomes really difficult and expensive so it should be avoided before hands. Variations on temperature according to the regions: Beside all this it depends upon the region you are living in whether that plant can be grown in there or not and the temperature range provided is followed by your region or not. There are a lot of plants, which are regional and cannot be taken from one part of the world to the other; again the reason is temperature difference. Moreover, the plants that are classified as annual, biannual, perennial etc. also categorized on the basis of temperature that changes all around the year even within the same region. So, to be laconic one could say that the temperature do matter when it comes to plantation. So, do take care of all the above things while you plant new veggies and fruits.

The newspaper will prevent any grass and weed seeds from germinating, but unlike fabric, it will decompose after about 18 months. By that time, any grass and weed seeds that were present in the soil on planting will be dead. It’s green, it’s cheaper than fabric, and when you decide to remove or redesign the bed later on, you will not have the headache you would with fabric.
Put the newspaper over the dirt 3-4 pages thick and then covered it with mulch.
