The Beltane celebration honored life over death and celebrated the rebirth of the world. Above all, it was a fertility festival, a symbolic union of the God and Goddess, of the divine masculine and the divine feminine. A young virgin, often dressed in white with a crown of flowers, was chosen to be the Queen of the May. Her consort went by many names, including the Green Man, the May Groom, the May King, and Jack-of-the-Green, often dressed in green and decorated with leaves.

Beltane Prayer

Sabbats and Esbats - Beltane Prayer

On Beltane Eve and its counterpart, Samhain Eve (or Halloween), the veil between the two worlds is at its thinnest. But unlike Samhain, when spirits of the dead roam the world, on Beltane Eve it is the fairies who are returning from their winter respite, carefree and full of fairy delight and mischief. Beware, tonight the Queen of the Fairies will ride out on her white steed to entice humans away to fairyland. If you hear the bells on her horse, turn your face away, or she may choose you.

At Beltane, villagers would traditionally travel into the woods to gather nine sacred woods needed to build the Beltane bonfires. Each wood has a magical property: Birch is for the Goddess; Oak is for the God; Hazel is for knowledge and wisdom; Rowan is for life; Hawthrone is Purity and fairy magic; Willow is for death; Fir is for birth and rebirth; Apple is for love and family; and the Vine is for joy and happiness.

A seemingly negative card describes a situation that needs your focused attention. Work with the energy of that card to produce feelings of safety. Position 2: Abundance. Feelings of plenty.

Book of Shadows: Beltane is a fun festival, usually associated with lots of singing and dancing, fire jumping, and raucous behavior. It was seen as a brief respite from toil when winter was now only a memory and the summer and harvests were but a few months away. It is the last of the Spring fertility festivals and the most joyous.
