The Edge of Winter by Luanne Rice ~ So... this is a "beach read" of sorts. But definitely not your typical fluffy, like you'd expect, summer beach read! I have been seeing tons of Luanne Rice's books at Goodwill and McCay's and always just pass them right up. I thought that she was more of a "romance" type of author. So... on a whim, I picked this one up at McCay's and read the synopsis on the back. I bought it for one reason only... Well two actually. 1) It was on the bargain shelf for .90 cents and 2) It takes place in Rhode Island. Score!! I grew up in RI, so I thought there would be an instant connection! How right I was! They even mentioned Misquamicut Beach!! I just visited there for the first time last summer, so I could picture exactly the soft sand, adorable houses on the beach and beautiful ocean waves! The setting was right at the end of winter towards spring and mostly on a fictional beach called Refuge Beach on the coast of Rhode Island. However, Luanne made this beach as real to me, as if it were Scarborough Beach in Narragansett, where my parents took me as a child. Her vivid details of the coast really brought back memories and made me yearn to go back.... I could totally place myself in the shoes of one of those Rhode Islanders!!! There is so much going on in this story, yet it is all weaved together so perfectly. What an amazing cast of characters Luanne writes about, including the snowy owl!! Each one of them has so much depth and brings so much to the story. There is such passion in everything they do. Yes, there is so much love and romance in this book, but not in the "romance novel" sense. Mother/daughter love, old love and new love & respect between fathers and sons and mothers and sons..... It's all there....generations of it! Sure....there's some hurt and betrayal along the way too...it wouldn't be interesting or keep your attention if there wasn't!! Thank you, McCay's, for putting this one on the bargain shelf, otherwise I may never have discovered this brilliant author!! I actually just went to Goodwill and snatched up 4 more of her books!!! Woot woot!!

He brings us two unique and complex characters who are against all humanity in a battle against all battles.
