World War I, 1914-1918. World War II was such a massive event involving more countries than any previous war that WWI is often overlooked. The first war officially introduced modern warfare including mechanization and alternative weaponry, established the foundation for WWII, killed 15-18 million people including millions of civilians, wounded over 25 million military personnel, and helped consolidate independent nation-states into the countries that exist today.
