This nonfiction response is great for students to begin to recognize the features of nonfiction pieces of writing. They can see what nonfiction writing has in common and pick out the main idea and supporting evidence. This worksheet would also be good for students to summarize and use again to reference the piece of work they read.

Have children create a bracelet using a green bead for the beginning, a red bead for the ending and 3 or more other beads for the middle. As children retell a story have them slide a bead from left to right for the beginning and then another bead for each story component. With younger children I would use three detail (middle beads) however, you may wish to increase the number with older students.

The Dot is a great book for kids struggling with perfectionism and teaching them to recognize the good in themselves, not just what they see as not good enough... and then to cement the lesson kids can make their own dot pictures like in the story.
