Animal Farm | George Orwell (E-Audiobook). The famous quote "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" sums up this wonderful tale of a revolution gone terribly wrong (as they are wont to do). It will leave you singing "Beasts of England" and looking suspiciously at any swine you might meet. ~JM

Game of Thrones | George R.R. Martin. The 1st of a totally addictive series, this book makes fantasy read like a historical political thriller... ~KK-D

River of Stars | Akiko Yosano. The two Japanese themed children's books were just leading up to this book, which is the jewel in the crown. Yosano Akiko, a facinating woman in her own right, worked to reinvent and revolutionize Japanese poetry and literature and her translation of The Tale of the Genji is without equal even today. These poems are breath-taking, shiveringly beautiful. I devoured this book over a morning and plan to reread it tonight. It's that good. ~KK-D

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes | Eleanor Coerr. Since Yoko got me thinking of paper cranes, I had to find the story of Sadako. This is an excellent retelling of her story. The prose contains a sense of hope and sadness, which is perfect for the story. The epilogue talks of the peace statue for Children's Peace Day and instructions on how to fold a crane... ~KK-D

Lethal | Sandra Brown. Action Thriller that keeps you guessing about the identity of the bad guy to the end. Hard to put down! Even stopped knitting to finish it. ~LR

Wither | Lauren DeStefano. The first book in the Chemical Garden trilogy. Genetic engineering has gone wrong, resulting in people dying in their twenties (women at age 20, men at 25). Probably a safe bet for Hunger Games fans. ~LW

Fallen Angel | Daniel Silva. Wow! This begins with Gabriel Allon, art restorer and always attempting to be retired Mossad spy, working on restoring a Caravaggio at the Vatican. He is called in when the body of a woman is found and his friends at St. Peter's ask him to do an unofficial investigation. This leads Gabriel through the world of stolen antiquities, the Mafia and Hezbollah as allies and back to Jerusalem. As always, the suspense never lets up. ~LF

Between Shades of Gray | Ruta Sepetys. Fictional account of the Lithuanian genocide during Stalin for a teenage girl artist's viewpoint. Realistic and interesting and important. Uplifting and moving story in the context of horror. ~JH

Breaking Silence | Linda Castillo. A stellar...recommendation. The 3rd in a series featuring Kate Burkholder, a small town Ohio police chief who grew up Amish. Three Amish adults are found dead in their barn and the children are in shock. Are the deaths just a farm accident, related to a spate of local anti-Amish hate crimes, or is there something much more sinister going on? Don't let the Amish-country setting fool you - there is nothing cozy about this series. ~SK

Pray for Silence | Linda Castillo. [A coworker] said I had to check this series out and now I know why. The 2nd Kate Burkholder mystery, starring the formerly Amish police chief. What could possibly be the motive behind the slaughter of an entire Amish family? Clues in a teenage girl's journal lead to the exposure of the creepy underbelly of Painters Mill. Unforgettable. ~SK

Snowman | Jo Nesbo. If you've had your fill of dark Swedish detectives and thrillers, it's time to go Norwegian! Oslo PD's Harry Hole is on the trail of a serial killer who's been targeting women with children and leaving snowmen as his calling card. Why, oh, why have I never read this series before?...I'll never look at a snowman the same way again. ~SK
