By the start of the third day of the battle the Union forces had moved into a fish hook formation, starting at Culp's Hill and ending at Little Round Top. General Lee would try to split the Union line by attacking its center. He would order roughly 12,000 men to charge across the Emmitsburg Road and up Cemetery Ridge. This would become known as Pickett's Charge and was unsuccessful. Lee realizing that is army had been beat retreated back into Virginia on July 4.
